Low Back Conditions

There are a number of injuries of the low back that can be successfully treated by chiropractic care. In certain conditions the pain is located around the low back area. In other conditions the pain can be accompanied by numbness and tingling that may travel part, or all of the way, down the leg.

The following are low back and pelvic conditions that can be successfully treated by chiropractic care:-

Disc Prolapse (Slipped Disc)

Results in localised pain at the site of injury in the back and radiates pain usually down the back of the legs, sometimes as far as the ankle. Can be accompanied by tingling and weakness in the leg, giving rise to the term 'sciatica'. Often gives shooting pain down the leg.

Facet Irritation

Results in a focus of pain local to either one or both sides of the low back. The pain is increased by movement from one position to another, sitting to standing or lying to sitting for example. Patients often report having to rachet themselves up from one position to another.

Ligamentous Sprain Strain

Will give similar symptoms to Facet Irritation

Sacro-iliac Injuries

Pain is usually over the posterior of the pelvis, focal to one side. Can refer pain into the leg; mostly only as far as the knee. Sometimes symptoms of pain refer into the groin on the affected side and/or into the low back. Usually pain worsened by prolonged standing

Knee

The knee is one of the largest joints in the body and throughout its daily activity has, one moment, to be fully flexible and then, immediately after, firm and rigid, to take the full weight of the body. To deal with this dynamic joint, the knee is served by numerous ligaments. It is common to sprain or strain one or more of these ligaments. Chiropractic treatment can reduce any inflammation and improve the strength of the injury.

Ligamentous Injury

Depending on the ligament injured, the focus of the pain will be vary. One of the most common sites of injury is on the lateral side of the knee joint. Pain is local to the side of the knee. There is often a feeling of 'giving way'.

Osteoarthritis

Either due to the passage of time, or injury, the joint and associated bone, start to degenerate. In the knee there are two common sites of injury: at the back of the patella (knee cap), or on either side of the knee joint. Pain is focal to the site of injury but in the case of osteoarthritis of the knee cap, symptoms may appear centrally at the top of the knee.

The above list of conditions is not exhaustive. Should you have a concern that symptoms that relate to yourself are not illustrated here then please contact the clinic on 01943 605060.

The Shoulder

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body and, as a result, requires co-ordinated movement between the joint, associated ligaments and various muscle groups aligned to the shoulder.

The following are conditions of the shoulder that can be successfully treated by chiropractic care.

  • Ligamentous Sprain Strain
  • Adhesive Capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder)
  • Impingement Syndrome
  • Tendonitis
  • Capsular Sprain Strain

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is one of the most prevalent skeletal conditions of postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis effects the bone density of the skeleton. The early detection of the presence of osteoporosis can have immense benefits to the sustainability of the integrity of the skeleton through the later decades of life.

Neck Pain

Neck pain can originate from the neck, the head, the shoulder, upper or lower back. The chiropractor's holistic assessment enables the location of the cause to be diagnosed quickly and the appropriate treatment to undertaken.

Acute Neck Stiffness

Stiffness of the supportive muscles of the neck will cause restrictions in the movement of the neck. This lack of function in the neck can cause injury in the joints or other soft tissues. Chiropractic treatment will relax the musculature, increase the range of motion of the neck joints and thus reduce the symptoms felt. The use of specific exercises will enable the patient to help in the management of the symptoms both in the short term and to mitigate against the likelihood of the symptoms returning.

Headaches and Migraine

The vast majority of headaches arise from problems in the neck. There are numerous causes of migraines. In many cases chiropractic care not only resolves the onset of migraines but also gives the patient appropriate instruction on how to mitigate future problems.

Whiplash

The symptoms that lead to a diagnosis of whiplash, are well understood by chiropractors. Ligaments and muscles and other soft tissues of the neck have been sprained or strained. The speed of the impact will have a direct effect on the exact tissue that is damaged and the severity of injury. Chiropractic treatment will assist to improve the movement of the damaged muscles and soft tissues and thus reduce the pain levels and improve the mobility of the neck. The chiropractors ability to manipulate the injured joints of the neck at the appropriate time helps to speed up the recovery from whiplash injury.
