It is one of the most common statements made by patients, when they first present to us here at Ilkley Chiropractic Clinic. – “My GP says that there is nothing wrong with me” – or “My GP says that there is nothing that can be done, and I will just have to live with it”.
The first thing to state is that GP’s are not very well trained at all, to make such a judgement. There is this misperception that GP’s have a detailed knowledge in regards to musculoskeletal pain. The fact is that they do not, and the truth is that their knowledge is pitiful, particularly, when they will happily have a patient present to them and happily make statements based on their poor level of knowledge, being well aware that the patient believes that they have appropriate knowledge to make any statement.
Even when the issue is boney and can be seen on an X-ray, the radiologists are not looking for the right things. The radiologists are looking for gross pathologies, cancers, fractures etc. They are not trained to look at subtle biomechanical changes, and asymmetries that are clearly seen on an X-ray, and can well be the reason for the severe pain that the patient is suffering. Hence they report that the findings are “normal”, when in fact they are not!
So in the NHS you have GP’s who are not trained to diagnose appropriately, and radiologists, who are not trained to read X-rays to diagnose most biomechanical conditions. Therefore, as a patient, one arrives at a situation where one does not know what to do; as the clinician, that they had been conditioned to believe is the clinician with the knowledge with whom to consult, does not have a clue. Further, even if one can get an X-ray, it is most probably the incorrect investigation to recommend in the first place, and also, the clinician charged with reporting on it, is not adequately qualified to report correctly.
So if you can associate with this predicament, and have lost faith in understanding what is wrong with you; take comfort that the issue is not that you do not have a problem. The issue is that you have wasted your time going to clinicians who are not trained to give you the answers that you need in the first place.
Consult a chiropractor and you will not only be exposed to a very well trained clinician who can diagnose your problem. But also someone who can properly read your X-rays, and also able to treat your biomechanical condition. Your chiropractor will give you a clear working diagnosis and unlike others you may have seen, provide you a clear management strategy to improve your condition.
